INTRODUCTION: The V&A Museum and Serpentine Gallery

Furthering on our week of research, we went to the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Serpentine Gallery to gather some primary research, looking to pieces of art through history to gain inspiration of how past artists have expressed various ideas in various mediums.

V&A

The tombs and graves section of the V&A gave a intruiging look into the evolution and adaptations of art over generations, from the Ancient to the Medieval. Seeing such a personal item such as a grave/tomb, the difference in appearances of each sculpted face shows an artist expression not only of appearance but also of personality. The difference between the times of the Ancient and the Medieval also seem to show a difference in the expression of power and status of each tombed individual.

Serpentine

The exhibition they had in the Serpentine Gallery on the day was by an artist named Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. In the artists own words, her portraits "focus on figures that exist out of a specific time and place". I enjoyed these images as they were solely focused on body language and emotion of the figure without any distracting elements, a theme which seems like it could be quite difficult to do.
